3 Lessons for Creating Great eLearning Experiences

What’s the buzz around eLearning anyway?

eLearning platforms and courses are an excellent way for organisations to build their business profile; enhance and promote their brand; and develop deeper customer relationships.

One way eLearning can do this is by taking the existing knowledge that businesses already have within their organisation and re framing it in a contemporary, interactive and highly relevant format for consumers.

You may be keen to get on-board with the eLearning movement but have a number of tough questions to answer. These may include:-

  • What’s the best online learning platform for my business?
  • How long should your eLearning course be?
  • What should you put in or leave out?
  • How can you create content that is valuable and engaging?

Recently, Juntos Marketing has had the opportunity to develop some exciting eLearning solutions for our clients – including creating content and designing and developing online courses using LMS – Learning Management Systems. We’ve done this in the health, aged care and professional services sectors.

It’s been a challenging but rewarding experience.

 

Here are three top things we have learnt along the way:

1. Looks matter more than instructions

Customers are naturally drawn to materials that have visual appeal.

eLearning is a visual medium and an interactive learning experience for users. People are naturally drawn to content that looks good and is easy to use. It’s that initial engagement that really matters and keeps people motivated and engaged in your content. Because of this, it’s the online courses that look great that are the often the most popular and receive the best feedback.

We all know that good visual design is a vital part of good communications. So, we recommend you pay attention to branding and design and make sure your content is visually connected to the context of your course.

2. Focus on eLearning activities not just information

A clear pathway for users to follow makes for a great eLearning experience.

Too often, eLearning courses are just a dump of information. Make sure you include actions and activities. What is the user supposed to do? How can they demonstrate that they know how to do it out there in the real world? What activities can you include in the eLearning course that mimics those real-world decisions and actions?

Ask yourself, what does the learner need to do with this information? Don’t fall for the ‘linear information-dump’ trap. It should rather be a ‘backwards design’ approach that focuses on the measurable action and builds backwards to the information that supports it.

3. Smaller Bites Are Better than One Big Meal

Small bite-size elearning content is easier for customers to digest.

eLearning follows a similar principle to the old adage that smaller meals spread out over time are better than one big feed: It’s better to build smaller modules and space the content over time than hit the learner with one or two big, heavy modules. Research shows that smaller bites of eLearning, spaced over time are more effective.

An added benefit is that shorter modules are easier to build and modify. It means that if you need to update or replace a module, it’s quicker and less expensive to update vs longer, denser content.
